Dual Immersion

Language Academy (Dual Immersion)
Dual Immersion: The Dual Immersion program at Bonnie Oehl Elementary is designated to promote biliteracy in English and Spanish for students in grades K-6 by following the District's 90/10 model of second language acquisition.

  • As Students begin the program in kindergarten, the instructional day consist of 90 percent Spanish instruction and 10 percent English Instruction.
  • Each year thereafter, Spanish language instruction is reduced and English language instruction is increased by 10 percent.
  • As students enter the upper grades, the program balances out at 50 percent for each language of instruction.

The goal of our program if for students to continue in a Dual Immersion setting all the way through high school and earn the San Bernardino City Unified School District Seal of Biliteracy upon high school graduation.

Positive behavior and regular attendance are critical components to student success in the program. High levels of parental involvement and communication are necessary in order to maintain an active parent-school partnership.

Students in grades 1-6 will need to be assessed by the District's Language Assessment Center (LAC) prior to placement. You may contact the LAC at (909) 891-1037.
